Waterfowl Hunter Takes A Plunge
Local Idaho Waterfowl hunter took a plunge into freezing cold water a few weeks ago. Jared Fox, 25, had quite a cold plunge to start his 2022. After downing a duck, on a nearly frozen river, Jared walked out in his waders to grab the bird. The water seemed fairly shallow, thinking nothing of it, he slowly moved forward excited to bring home dinner to his fiance. One misstep and he plunges into the water. The visibility of the water was poor, so he thought the location of the duck would stay at a walk-able shallow level. After falling into the river, Jared realized he had fallen deep into the water. His waders filled with water, causing it to act as a weight holding him down. His head was below the water, with freezing water temps and an air temperature of 20-25 degrees Fahrenheit, he knew he had to act quick.
The area he was hunting was a frozen over river in which Jared moved further down and found a partially open water flow with no ice over it till the water middle of the river. While under, he realized the current was pulling him towards the middle of the river. As he looked up towards the surface, he could see that he was headed towards the middle of the river which was completely frozen over. Jared acted quickly, pressing the barrel of his shotgun to push himself towards the shallows. His plan worked. He managed to make it out of the freezing water and get on dry land. As he took off his waders, he then realized he still had to hike out back to his truck. With an air temp in the low 20’s (Fahrenheit), he had to move as fast as he can.
